About The Upper Room
Our Beginnings
The Upper Room was founded by a group of around 60 followers of Jesus who started gathering for prayer and worship in late 2009 in response to a revelation of Luke 22.12:
“you will find a large Upper Room fully furnished, make preparations there.”
We gathered upstairs in a Newmarket gym — our first “fully furnished” Upper Room.
In January 2010 we stepped out in faith to plant the Upper Room. We set up and packed out each week in Parnell school hall. Not long after the church community of around 180 pulled together and renovated our current warehouse space where in July 2011 we began the next chapter of the Upper Room in Clayton Street, Newmarket.
The Upper Room is a community who believe in lives being transformed by God’s life-breathing Holy Spirit as the name of Jesus is lifted up as living Lord over all created things.
Dr Craig & Kim Heilmann
Our Founders
Dr Craig and Kim Heilmann are the founders and senior Pastors of the Upper Room. Both are graduates of Regent College in Vancouver. Craig earned his doctoral degree in ethics from Duke University under Stanley Hauerwas in October 2009 and is widely published. Kim, daughter of Ian and Mary Grant, worked with Youth For Christ before founding the hugely successful Attitude programme for sex education in schools.
Craig provides the theological rigour at the core of Upper Room and together they lead the vision to be a thinking, as well as praying and worshipping community.
